About Book Alley project

Book alleys, a unique project aimed at the popularization of literature and reading has been carried out in our city since 2015.

Launched by order of G.S.Poltavchenko, the governor of Saint-Petersburg, it offers cultural space with elements of a reading room, a bookstore and a literature guide-park on open air. People come here to purchase books and get new impressions.

The first Book Avenues welcome visitors near the Mikhailovsky castle of the Russian Museum from July to October. More than 20 thousand titles of books are available at affordable prices in 40 pavilions.

About 300 thousand people visited the Avenue for 3 months.  160 events were organized, 45 thousand books were sold.

It is important to emphasize that "Book alleys" is a joint project of the Government of St. Petersburg, the Russian Museum and the writers' unions of the city.

On November 30, 2015, another project "Christmas Book Alleys" was set up for visitors to buy interesting books and contribute to the development of city charity projects.

In the run up to Christmas and the New Year both books and products made by charity foundations were presented to visitors of the Book Alleys in the historical center of St. Petersburg - Malaya Konyushennaya.

In 2016, the Book Avenue, which had become popular with the citizens of St. Petersburg and guests of the city, opened again on May 14. On Malaya Konyushennaya there are now 60 pavilions, where more than 46 thousand titles of books are on sale at affordable prices and the range is constantly expanding.

Summer book alleys on Malaya Konushennaya Street are hitting records of attendance. To date, Book Alleys on Malaya Konyushennaya has been already visited by about 750 thousand of local citizens and visitors.

It should be noted that on the Book Alleys there are about 1 thousand titles of books by St. Petersburg writers. This allows the citizens to get acquainted with the works of their contemporaries.

In the summer of 2016 Book Alleys also took a trip to suburban gardening and the city districts. Thanks to the project "Book Alleys", citizens and guests of St. Petersburg were offered the opportunity to purchase books and participate in bookcrossing. People are very enthusiastic about this idea. After all, book exchange is not only an opportunity to give a book a new life, but also an amazing chance to communicate with new interesting people. Today, the number of book exchange participants has reached 67 thousand people.
